Start the new year as you mean to go on – set goals – make plans and release your creative side.

Art classes start again in January working with colour to help brighten up the dull winter months.

Juliette’s Tuesday morning Portrait classes are concentrating on Pastels for the next few sessions. After a slow build up before Christmas, students can experiment and have a bit of fun using the intense pigments this medium is known for .

Barbara Valentine’s mixed-media classes vein a week later on Tuesday 17th January 1 – 3.30 and Wednesday 18th Jan 10- 3.30.

Lots of interesting subjects and techniques explored including coloured pencils for fine observational drawings (example pictured) as well as more expressional renditions of familiar scenes and landscapes.

New Portrait term starts on Tuesday 29th November, concentration on ‘Introducing Colour’ for 10 weeks

Students will gradually be introduced to coloured pastels during an intensive 5 week period using this versatile medium. We have an inspiring array of new sitters to draw and working on a larger scale helps to free up everyones unique style.

There are still a few places left on the course, with two models per session in this mixed abilities class.


Due to popular demand I’ve been busy organising regular monthly PORTRAIT workshops on the following dates –

Saturday 25th March ( Mothering Sunday weekend – perfect gift)

Saturday 22nd April ( tail end of the school Easter Holidays)

Saturday 22nd July ( a follow on from the Oil Painting Summer School)


Each workshop runs from 10 am to 3 pm, refreshments provided, please bring your own art materials and a packed lunch.

The model will be in one pose for the whole day – perfect opportunity to get the oil paints out and have a intensive painting session. Step by step demonstrations and advice.

GREETINGS EVERYONE – we hope you’ve all had a wonderful Summer break, now we’ve rested, refreshed and rejuvenated – we are raring to go!

Mountfield Community Arts has continued to inspire and encourage the artistic side of all our students in all mediums.  Our aim is to spread the joy of creativity and enable everyone to gain the courage to continue their journey.

Weekly classes begin again for the new term on Tuesday 13th September. Juliette Dodd teaches the morning Portrait class at 10 am – 12.30. Specially adapted to for beginners, topics included are the secrets of getting a likeness, easy to follow rules of measurements and proportions, plus useful tips on composition. The first term concentrates of the fundamentals of drawing as the basis of all great art, using pencils, conte, pen & ink, charcoal and chalk. Keeping things simple until its time to progress.


Barbara Valentine holds regular weekly classes in Mixed-media, encompassing a whole range of different techniques and media – pastels, oils, watercolour, pencils etc. Tuesday afternoons plus two sessions on Wednesdays to cater for all abilities and subjects. Students are encouraged to work on their own projects under the expert guidance of multi award winning miniature painter, Barbara Valentine.

All the classes held here at Mountfield are very informal and friendly, attracting people from all walks of life and varying distances away, coming together in a shared love of art and beauty. These unique classes strive to encompass the traditional teachings of art from practicing artists/ qualified tutors who can genuinely make a difference to your life.

Over six weeks, intensive oil painting sessions with two models each of 3 weeks.

I was lucky enough to book two fantastic models for the Summer School this year.

Setting a scene with ‘The Cavalier’, wearing period costume and accompanying objects, this will give you an excellent  challenge in painting different fabrics and textures.

5th, 12th and 19th July at 10 – 12.30

The second half of the course will whizz straight into the 1960’s, the lovely model will be wearing groovy colours and a beehive hairdo for total contrast.

With step by step demonstrations from the tutor, Juliette Dodd, this course is aimed at all abilities

Working on both canvas and board, some easels available, paints and mediums can be provided.

A full day working from the nude, starting with a series of quick sketches to loosen up, depicting movement from dance inspired poses. Followed by a few longer sittings which are suitable for most drawing and painting mediums.

Demonstrations by the tutor with step by step guidance on how to capture balance and motion as well as body proportions.

All abilities welcome.
