I am often asked where people can find out about my next public demonstration so this is a brief list of my future events. Many Art groups and societies welcome new guests for a small fee, please feel free to come along on the day.

Friday 16th October – Lydd Art Group – 7 – 9 pm – Introduction to Portraiture ( Charcoal & Chalk)

Thursday 12th November  – Wood Church Art Group – 10am – 12.30 – Introduction to Portraiture

Thursday 28th January ’16 – Fairlight Art Group – 2 – 4 pm – Watercolour Portraits

Saturday 9th July ’16 – East Sussex Arts Club – 2 – 4.30 pm – Pastel Portraits

Recent demonstrations of  ‘INTRODUCTION TO PASTEL PORTRAITS’ were at the Three Oaks Art Group and Arlington Art Group, I started off with a run down to get a likeness in charcoal then ways of approaching the subject with only a few selected colours. Working from my young model Alexandra, after break all the member joined in a short workshop to try their hand using my described techniques, with great results from both groups.

Carrying on the pastel theme I created the annual Hastings Old Town Carnival Queen Portrait as a public demonstration outside ( luckily the weather was lovely), gathering an interested crowd of onlookers. The framed portrait was presented by the Mayor of Hastings at the official Crowning Ceremony at the beginning of August as part of Old Town Carnival week.

INK PEN & WASH demonstration was fun at The Society of Eastbourne Artists one evening in September, calling for volunteers from the audience I managed to draw 8 quick portraits in the time. Each one showing a different approach to using this traditional but unforgiving medium. One of my pictures went horribly wrong but that was good to show everyone not to be worried about making mistakes as its something we all do!

Something unusual – ‘ A RELIEF PORTRAIT IN CLAY’ demo for the Battle & District Art Group in September. The audience were fascinated to watch how quickly the relief was begun, I worked on a pre prepared clay slab and managed to create a likeness in the time, after break the members could ask many questions while I worked on the finer details. The projected image from the camera really helped show this technique as I worked quite small and on a flat surface.

Other mediums and subjects what are suitable for a two hour demonstration are ~

ACRYLIC Portraits –  this can also be done fast, from approximately 20 minutes to an hour, with running commentary plus Q&A, so allows time for members to join in.

OIL Portraits – a two hour painting demonstration working from the model, with commentary.

WATERCOLOUR Portraits – working on a smaller scale, this medium would be better suited to Art Groups that have a camera with Projector. Demonstrations will be fast ( 15 – 20 minutes) allowing for a few different approaches to be shown plus colour mixing. Suitable for the whole group to join in.

WATERCOLOUR PENCILS – again this is a fast demonstration, lasting about 20 – 30 minutes and also allowed plenty of time for the group to join in. Works will be on a small scale so a camera & projector would be needed for optimum viewing.

PORTRAITS FOR BEGINNERS – This is a sure fire introduction for all ages and abilities showing how to get a likeness very easily. I used this approach recently with a local Scout group ( aged 7 – 13)  to help them gain their Art badges, then a few days later showed the same methods to The Weald of Kent Art Group ( aged 50 – 99) with similar results and very happy participants.

Please contact me to book a talk & demonstration for small parties, art groups and societies, clubs etc, mainly in the South East of England. Fees are dependant on medium, travel and model requirements also if it is a workshop and/or a demonstration.

A big welcome to all our new and returning students, we are happy to help and guide you through your artistic journey.

Weekly classes to exercise, inspire, and teach – using a wide range of medium and techniques to stretch and push your natural abilities to excel in excellence.

Juliette Dodd will be teaching the Tuesday morning PORTRAIT class, beginning with the well loved and traditional medium of pencils. This course is for all abilities with special attention given to beginners, guiding you through the steps of drawing an accurate likeness and understanding the anatomical structure of the face, neck and shoulders. Once students are confident in the basics we will then progress on a journey through the many drawing and painting mediums in a gentle but challenging way with step by step demonstrations.

Returning students will be encouraged to pursue their quest for mastery over their favourite mediums – oils, watercolours or pastels.

A variety of interesting models sitting for two or three weeks in succession, giving scope to spend longer on a painting or to get to know a face well from many angles and different lighting effects.

The last term closed with the Portraits in Oils Summer School, sadly the final session was cancelled due to the model breaking her arm and having hospital appointments, although reference photos were taken to enable students to finish off their paintings at their leisure. This could also be a useful topic to carry on in class as working from photographs is something artists need to be able to do for various reasons. Oil paints can be as quick as watercolours to use plus there are water soluble brands on the market, especially useful for people who don’t like the smell of thinners as well as being easy to clean up after use.

Although I have been too busy this summer to finish my demonstration painting, I’ll bring it in along with the reference photo and we can carry on working with oil paints together as many students enjoyed their first experience of this medium.
